Can language models invent solutions to new problems?

A commentator challenges the claim that large language models are limited to memory and retrieval, arguing that their learned representations allow them to find new solutions.

TLDR

A commentator disputes a quoted claim that language models cannot invent solutions to new problems, pointing to von Neumann as an example of strong memory coexisting with creativity. They argue that training shapes a model’s representations rather than simply storing facts. In a follow-up reply, they say the network’s information lies in relationships between numerical weights, while describing the limits of those relationships’ expressivity as unclear.

Thore Graepel’s AI reasoning argument sparked a public debate over what LLMs are missing

In posts tied to a new MIT Technology Review piece, former Google DeepMind researcher Thore Graepel argued that advanced AI needs auditable reasoning, then drew responses from Yann LeCun, David Duvenaud and Gary Marcus.

A straighter internal map reportedly helped an AI planner reach maze goals more often

A post describing research from NYU, Brown and the University of Toronto says a rule that penalized bends in the model’s internal paths raised its goal-reaching rate from 52.7% to 90.7% in a two-room task.

Yann LeCun@ylecunNope. It's still true. Where is your domestic robot? Where is your Level-5 self-driving car? Where is your robot car that can learn to drive in a few hours of practice like any 17 year old? Where is your AI system that can understand the real world and quickly learn new skills like a house cat? There is no question that AI will eventually become as intelligent as humans in all domains. *** BUT *** 1. We're still far from that, even if AI and computer technology surpasses humans in an ever-increasing number of tasks. 2. It won't be based on LLMs, although LLMs will have a role to play (e.g. as a text interface).15d
spicylemonade@spicey_lemonadeI used to think this but GPT 6 Astra black-pilled me. It is able to navigate 3d environments, manipulate robots, and drive cars quite well. I believe the only thing lacking is speed. I also think (concerning turn based games/non real time environments) current AI is much more learning efficient than a 17 year old (per arc agi 3 and ksp bench). I wouldn’t be surprised if a GPT 7 can do all of these things.15d
