TLDR

Moonshot AI published the Kimi K3 license for its model weights and code. The MIT-inspired terms permit free non-commercial use while requiring companies exceeding $20M/yr to negotiate separate commercial deals. Display of Kimi K3 is required for entities above 100M users or $20M/mo revenue. Researchers described the terms as a middle ground between open and restricted models, noting possible effects on large-scale inference hosting and fine-tuning integrations.

Ah yes, our old favorite variant of open: “open”. https://twitter.com/natolambert/status/2081760901020201086

I prefer fully open licenses, but this seems like a reasonable middle ground. Only major restriction is if you're going to compete with them on inference at large scale. Thank you, Moonshot! https://twitter.com/natolambert/status/2081760901020201086

Kimi's new license is quite interesting. Some restrictions on what model hosting companies can do with it ...

People who care primarily about access and freedom rather than open source ideology will see this as a totally reasonable license. Ideological open source purists will hate it. https://twitter.com/petergostev/status/2081762420947562928

to be precise, it says you can't use it without a separate agreement if your revenue >$20M/yr and you run a MaaS. So, even you want to use K3 in end user products, as long as you run a MaaS (irrelevant to K3), you still need a separate agreement.…

Kimi K3 license. It's inspired by MIT but distinctly non-commercial, where any company making over $20M/yr must get a specific commercial deal (and display Kimi K3 if over 100M users or $20M/mo revenue)
