TLDR

Reuters, citing the Financial Times, reports Nvidia is in early talks to acquire Reflection AI, invest further or pursue an acqui-hire. The chipmaker has already invested $800 million in the startup, according to the report. A deal could arrive within weeks, though discussions may still fall apart; Reflection declined to comment and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters.

Nvidia is discussing a deeper investment in Reflection AI or a potential acquisition, Reuters reports, citing the Financial Times and people with direct knowledge of the matter. The talks are at an early stage.

One option is an acqui-hire, in which Nvidia would hire Reflection employees and license the startup's technology instead of buying the company outright. The report said an agreement could be reached within weeks, though the discussions could still fall apart. Reflection declined to comment, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters.

Nvidia is already a major investor in Reflection after putting $800 million into the startup, according to the report. Reflection was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. In April, Laskin told CNBC the company was raising capital at a $25 billion pre-money valuation.

Reflection launched its first open-weight model, Beam, on Monday. The company is positioning it for coding and agentic tasks.

One option is an acqui-hire, in which Nvidia hires Reflection’s staff and licenses its technology without the antitrust review a full takeover would trigger. Nvidia used that structure for its $20B Groq deal last December, and a deal could come within weeks, though the talks could still fall apart. Nvidia is already one of Reflection’s largest shareholders after investing $800M and the Trump administration also wants Reflection to compete with China. Reflection says Beam is competitive with the larger GLM 5.2 on coding and agentic tasks, and matches its reasoning scores while using 3x to 4x less inference compute.22h
