Cloudflare Containers add runtime configuration and filesystem snapshots

Cloudflare says the new scheduling path starts sandboxes faster. Filesystem snapshots are in public beta and let agents save and restore their workspace.

TLDR

Cloudflare announced runtime image and instance selection for Containers, alongside filesystem snapshots in public beta. Its blog reports median startup falling from 4.049 seconds to 648 milliseconds in a ComputeSDK benchmark launching 100 sandboxes concurrently. The new features use the native ctx.container API within a Durable Object. Snapshots preserve files for later sessions; they are immutable and reusable.

Cloudflare has announced changes to Containers that let application code choose a sandbox’s image and instance type when it starts. Its September 30 update also adds filesystem snapshots in public beta for saving and restoring an agent’s workspace.

Featured Source

A Durable Object, the persistent controller attached to each Container, manages its lifecycle and state. Cloudflare says the new features are available through the native ctx.container API, using the durable_object scheduling policy.

Faster startup

Cloudflare’s blog reports that median time-to-interactive fell from 4.049 seconds to 648 milliseconds in ComputeSDK’s benchmark, which launches 100 sandboxes concurrently. ComputeSDK’s results page, last benchmarked September 25, lists a 648-millisecond median. The figures describe that startup test, rather than every agent task.

Saved workspaces

Cloudflare says snapshots retain repository files, installed dependencies, build caches, configuration and edits, so agents can resume without rebuilding the environment. The snapshots are immutable and reusable: multiple Containers can start from the same prepared baseline and make their own changes.

The company recommends migrating to ctx.container. It will maintain the legacy Container and Sandbox classes through December 31, 2026; existing deployments will keep running afterward, but those classes will stop receiving updates.
