The case against using Sonnet at max effort

A user recommends leaving Sonnet’s effort setting at its default for most tasks, arguing that max effort takes more time and costs more. At that point, they suggest using Opus instead.

TLDR

A user argues that Sonnet’s appeal is its balance of quality, speed and cost, which max effort can undermine by increasing thinking time and cost. They recommend Opus instead at that point. Claude Code defaults to medium effort, they say, while other settings remain available for edge cases.

edwin@edwinarbusok, just saying it outright: do not use Sonnet with max effort! at that point, you should probably be using Opus Sonnet is the model that balances quality/speed/cost so when you push it to max, it thinks a lot more... spends more time... and costs more. you start to lose what makes Sonnet useful! this is why we have default effort levels, and in Claude Code the default is medium. all the effort dials are still there for anyone with an edge case that needs them. but our recommendation for most is: don't touch that dial!12d
