Will AI expand what we can watch, or flood screens with 'endless dreck'?

A September 2026 post predicts that within five years, it will seem ridiculous to have only TV and films that took months or years and millions of dollars to make. A reply worries AI-centric production could churn out low-quality work.

TLDR

A September 2026 post predicts that within five years, viewers will find it ridiculous that they once had only shows and movies made over months or years at a cost of millions. A reply worries that AI-centric production could create 'endless dreck,' while perhaps a handful of even costlier productions would still feel fresh. It also questions whether AI can offer a fresh take on the human condition for human audiences.

Ross Wightman@wightmanrDon't you worry though that this will result in a bifurcation where we'll have endless dreck that's firehosed from AI centric production pipelines, and maybe a handful of movies or TV productions here or there that cost even more years and millions to produce something that feels fresh? At its core 'art' is a reflection of the human condition. Will AI ever have a fresh take on this with US as the intended audience? It will be Netflix rubbish at a much greater scale. It will apply to everything else too, art, music, architecture, etc...11d

"I think it'll get to a point where something's made on AI that's 100% undeniably good." "It will force people to say, 'I hated it because it was made with AI, but it was a really good movie.'" "Eventually that negativity will start to wane." "I am highly optimistic that there are going to be these diamonds among lumps of coal that will have real impact and be meaningful."11d
