Michael Bay reportedly set to direct the next ‘Transformers’ film

Deadline reports sources say Paramount has brought Steven Spielberg back to focus on “all creative aspects” of the next live-action Transformers film alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, putting him in a role similar to the one he held during the franchise’s early years. Deadline first reported that sourcing, and a later Deadline post repeated the same report.

Featured Source

Other supplied coverage describes the movie as the eighth live-action Transformers installment. Variety referred to it as an eighth film in the works, and Entertainment Weekly called it the eighth entry in the franchise.

As for what “returning” means here, supplied summaries citing Deadline say Spielberg held a similar creative role on the first two Transformers films. DiscussingFilm described him as having had that role on the first two movies, and CinemaWireNews repeated the same comparison while citing Deadline.

Bay is part of the report too, but with a different level of certainty. Deadline said Bay is in early talks to return as director. Separately, The Cinesthetic, citing Page Six, noted that Bay directed the franchise’s first five films beginning with 2007’s Transformers. Based on the supplied evidence, Spielberg’s reported creative role is the clearest development here; Bay’s involvement remains a talks-stage possibility.

👑 Free Guy 💙@FreeadditionHonestly, this one got me. When I saw Spielberg was coming back in as the main creative producer on the next Transformers, it didn’t feel like the usual studio headline. It felt like they finally remembered who actually got the whole thing off the ground in the first place. He wasn’t just some name they stuck on the early movies. He was the one who pushed for Bay when a lot of people still thought it was just a toy film that wouldn’t amount to much. And those first two ended up setting the bar for everything that followed. After that he stepped back a bit, and you could feel the difference once other directors took over. Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts had their moments, but they never quite had that same weight. Whoever at Paramount decided to pull him back in properly this time, and get him talking with Bay again while the script’s already sitting there, clearly knows what they’re doing. It’s not a guarantee, and “in talks” still means it could fall apart, but the fact they’re even trying to line the original pieces back up makes me more curious about this next one than I’ve been in years. If they actually let him shape it the way he did at the start, it might finally feel like a proper continuation instead of another reset. I’m not getting my hopes all the way up yet, but I’m paying attention.4d
