Cinema Tweets@CinemaTweets1Heart of the Beast (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a spiritual journey. A survival thriller in which Brad Pitt is lost in the wilderness with his dog Odin, anyone who has a special place in their heart for animals - especially dogs - is going to connect with this story. But Pitt’s charisma mixed with director David Ayer’s creative vision elevate a relatable story into a quality film. I’m really surprised by how emotional this film made me, not just because of Pitt’s quest to survive and overcome the odds, but because of his relationship with his dog. That 1-2 combination hit me right in the gut. Heart of the Beast is two hours well spent at the theater. Survival thrillers are always hard to pull off because it asks a lot of a film’s main actor. Think of a film like 127 Hours, Cast Away, or the 2013 Robert Redford film All is Lost. These movies all live & die on the lead actor’s performance because the lead actor 1) doesn’t have any scene partners and 2) doesn’t have any dialogue. It’s a lot of responsibility to put on one actor & if the actor isn’t able to meet the moment, the film usually fails. That’s largely the case here because Heart of the Beast only has three actors: Pitt, J.K. Simmons for about 5 minutes and Anna Lambe. All of which is to say this film hangs on Brad Pitt’s performance - and Pitt delivers. Even at 62, Pitt is capable of pulling off James Belmont, a retired veteran who’s exploring the quiet, beautiful seclusion of the wilderness with his combat dog Odin. The idea here is that while on vacation & trying to detach from his multiple tours, Belmont suffers a heart attack while operating his plane and both Odin & Belmont are stranded 59 miles from reality. Thus begins a quest for survival that embraces the elements, wild animals, and unforeseen danger. I’ll be totally honest, the first 20 minutes of the film is quite weak. I was concerned as the film unfolded that I would be…gulp…bored. But the tension within the film & the friction starts the moment Belmont’s plane crashes & hell breaks lose. Once you reach that point in the story, everything changes & things pick up. Part of that is because of Ayer’s direction. I noted in my review of Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars that I thought the sweeping, vast cinematography took my breath away, especially when shot from a plane. The same can be said here: Ayer shoots the hell out of the wilderness. Whether it’s water, fire, or mountainside, Ayer gives us (mostly) real filmmaking, save a few CGI wild animals that I didn’t really love. But back to my primary thesis: Pitt. This film is all about Pitt’s charisma and his ability to hold serve. Even in his 60s, I found Pitt to be magnificent. I’ve always - always - felt that Pitt is an incredibly underrated actor. The man’s filmography is littered with countless great films but I never feel like he’s the one credited for making the film great. What’s more is that I think Pitt’s intelligence as an actor is underestimated. I think he’s emotionally aware of himself and chose this film for a specific reason, which is that he probably feels can connect to Belmont. The power of Belmont’s quest to survive here isn’t just that he’s looking after himself, he’s looking after Odin. And Pitt embraces that focal point beautifully. As I mentioned in my opener, Odin is the differentiator between Heart of the Beast and other survival films. Maybe you could compare Odin to Wilson from Cast Away but even that comparison fails because Odin is so much more important to this story & Belmont’s life. I connected deeply with Odin. I don’t know if there’s ever been a dog in a film that I felt so united with. The final 20 minutes had me torn to shreds & you could hear people in the theater crying. The entire movie here reaffirmed my belief that we as humans probably don’t deserve dogs. They’re God’s gift to mankind. For multiple reasons, I really enjoyed Heart of the Beast. Whoever you are and wherever you are, I think you’ll enjoy it too.15d

HIDEO_KOJIMA@HIDEO_KOJIMA_ENWatched David Ayer’s “Heart of the Beast.” A story about a veteran and a former military reconnaissance dog, both suffering from PTSD, trying to survive and make their way home. The beautiful but unforgiving Alaskan wilderness stands in their way. There’s very little dialogue, but you can really feel the strong bond between the two of them (Brad Pitt and the dog). I have to admit, it made me cry. And in the end, the dog’s name, “Odin,” hits you like a body blow. It’s a shame they didn’t make a program for the film. 🐕‍🦺14d
