Minecraft Dungeons II is now available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, giving both of Nintendo's current console audiences access to Mojang's new action-RPG on September 29. Nintendo of America's launch post says players can step through a rift and fight to stop the illagers' plan from corrupting the Overworld.
The release also spans Steam, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Neither Nintendo nor Mojang's inspected materials provide a performance comparison between the Switch and Switch 2 versions, so the two editions should not be treated as technically identical or different without further specifications.
The Sift changes the destination
The central new location is the Sift, a dimension reached through mysterious rifts opening across the Overworld. Mojang's official overview describes unexplored lands, unfamiliar threats and new ways to customize a character's loadout and playstyle.
Dungeons II remains distinct from the main Minecraft sandbox. Instead of gathering blocks and constructing an open world, players move through a narrative-led action RPG, fighting mobs and collecting equipment. Mojang's gameplay announcement names weapons, armor, artifacts and talismans among the gear available during the campaign.
The sequel expands the first Minecraft Dungeons rather than requiring it. Mojang says newcomers can start here without playing the original, though returning players may recognize references. It also broadens the earlier game's weapons, enemies and systems.
Four players can mix local and online co-op
Players can take on the campaign alone or in groups of up to four. Couch co-op and online cross-play are both supported, while mixed co-op lets people sharing one console or PC join additional players online. Online play on consoles requires the relevant platform subscription.
Returning players have one extra account-linked reward to consider. Anyone who played the original Minecraft Dungeons and signs into Dungeons II with the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026, can unlock the Hero Cape in Dungeons II and in Minecraft's Java and Bedrock editions. Playing the original through Game Pass or Steam still counts if the same Microsoft account was used.
The Deluxe Edition adds four hero skins, the Soul Cape, a Blub pet and access to the first two DLC packs when they are released. Those extras are separate from the core launch, which puts the full sequel on both Nintendo generations at once.
