Why the nebula glows red

NASA describes IC 1805 as an emission nebula. Energetic radiation from hot stars near its center excites surrounding hydrogen gas, producing the deep red light seen in many images. The young star cluster at its core is called Melotte 15.

A nursery on a massive scale

An earlier NASA archive entry says the nebula stretches across nearly 200 light-years and contains regions where stars were born. That entry dates Melotte 15 to roughly 1.5 million years old, making the cluster very young by astronomical standards.
