TLDR

YouTuber Tobias Friedly of Game of Tobi has shown off Super Mario FX, a work-in-progress attempt to get Super Mario 64 running on the SNES. Reports say it is not a direct port: Friedly built a custom engine, rebuilt the game’s levels, and used original Super Mario 64 assets. The project relies on the SNES’s Super FX enhancement chip to handle basic polygonal 3D graphics. Friedly said the biggest technical limits have been level and texture sizes, with levels needing to stay under 2 MB. He plans to release the project once it is finished and stable.

Someone got Super Mario 64 running on the SNES using the Super FX chip

YouTuber Tobias Friedly, who runs the Game of Tobi channel, has shown off a work-in-progress SNES version of Super Mario 64 called Super Mario FX.

Rather than directly porting Nintendo’s 1996 Nintendo 64 game to much weaker hardware, Friedly reportedly built a custom engine and used it to run rebuilt Super Mario 64 levels with the original game’s assets. That distinction matters on a machine like the Super Nintendo, which was not designed for the kind of 3D game Super Mario 64 became famous for.

Why the SNES can do this at all

The project relies on the SNES’s Super FX enhancement chip, a coprocessor Nintendo used in some cartridges to expand what the console could do. Reports describe the chip as what makes it possible to render the rudimentary polygon-based 3D graphics needed for a game in this style without dumping all of that work onto the SNES CPU alone.

That does not make the hardware constraints disappear. Friedly said in his video, as summarized by Gizmodo, that the biggest obstacle has not been Super FX performance so much as level and texture-size limits. In particular, levels have to stay no larger than 2 MB.

XDA described the current result as retaining Super Mario 64’s in-game assets in a chunkier form suited to the hardware, with aggressive culling to keep scenes manageable on the SNES.

Release plans

Friedly has not released Super Mario FX yet, but reports say he plans to make it available once it is finished and stable.
