CNET reports that Qualcomm introduced the two chips at Snapdragon Summit 2026, positioning the Extreme model above the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Wccftech says the Extreme chip has two CPU cores running at 5GHz and six at up to 4GHz. CNET says Motorola’s newly revealed Signature 27 uses the Extreme chip and features a 50-megapixel main camera and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.

Qualcomm has split its next flagship smartphone processor into two versions: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company says the platforms are intended for the next generation of premium Android phones, bringing AI, gaming, camera and connectivity upgrades to handset makers.

Both chips use a 2nm manufacturing process, according to CNET’s reporting from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit. That matters because smaller process nodes are generally designed to offer more computing capability or efficiency within the same phone-sized power and heat limits. Qualcomm’s own announcement frames the pair as platforms for flagship devices rather than as a direct promise about any one phone’s battery life or speed.

What the Extreme tier adds

The standard Gen 6 succeeds Qualcomm’s prior top-end mobile platform. The Extreme version is a new step above it, which Qualcomm says gives manufacturers another choice at the highest end of the market.

CNET reports that Extreme adds AI-dedicated matrix cores to its Adreno graphics processor, plus AI graphics features such as upscaling and frame generation. The report also says Extreme supports 8K video at 60 frames per second and 4K video at 240 fps. Those capabilities describe what a phone maker can build around the platform; camera hardware, software and thermal design will still determine how they work in a finished device.

Qualcomm says both versions use its latest Oryon CPU design and can reach 5GHz, which it calls a first for a mobile CPU. The company’s performance and efficiency comparisons are measurements against the preceding generation, not independent tests of retail phones, so the useful comparison for buyers will arrive when devices using the chips are available.

Phones are already being announced

The two-chip approach is not just a specification-sheet exercise. CNET says Xiaomi and Motorola showed phones using the new platforms at the summit. Motorola’s Signature 27 uses the Extreme chip and is expected later in 2026, making it one of the first announced handsets tied to the higher tier.

The naming leaves an important practical question for the next Android cycle: which manufacturers choose the standard chip, which pay for Extreme, and whether the additional AI and graphics hardware produces a noticeable difference outside benchmark charts. Qualcomm has supplied the platforms; the first real answer will come from the phones built around them.
