Google is making Markdown files work natively across Google Drive and Google Docs, according to a post on X from Google Workspace Vice President Chandu Thota. Thota said users can now preview .md files in Drive, open them in Docs, edit them, comment on them, and collaborate on them without converting the file into a Google Doc (Chandu Thota on X).

That means Google is positioning Docs as a place where teams can work directly on Markdown files stored in Drive, instead of treating those files as something that first has to be turned into Google's own document format. Google’s main X account also reposted Thota’s announcement (Google on X).

A separate post linking to Neowin described the feature as available for both Google Workspace users and personal account users, though that post is summarizing the update rather than serving as the primary announcement (NeowinFeed on X).

The supplied evidence does not include additional rollout timing, platform limits, or technical detail about how Docs handles Markdown during editing, so those details remain unclear in this draft.
