TLDR

Google’s Motion Assist adds moving bubbles to an Android phone’s screen to help reduce motion sickness for passengers. Introduced in September, it requires Android 17 or later and updated Google Play services. Users can enable automatic activation or add a Quick Settings tile. Google notes that automatic vehicle detection may not always work.

Google’s Motion Assist puts moving bubbles along the edges of an Android phone’s screen to help passengers use it more comfortably during a ride. Google introduced the feature in its September Android Drop, describing it as a way to better align what users see with the movement they feel.

The bubbles move with the vehicle, and users can change their shape, color and opacity. Google presents Motion Assist as a feature intended to help reduce motion sickness.

How to turn it on

According to Google’s setup guide, you need Android 17 or later and updated Google Play services.

Open Settings and search for “Motion assist.” Alternatively, tap your profile, choose All services, then find Motion assist under Personal & device safety.

From there, enable Start in a moving vehicle for automatic activation, or add the Motion assist tile to Quick Settings for manual control. Google recommends using both: the phone may not always recognize that it is in a moving vehicle.

When automatic activation starts the feature, a silent notification lets you turn it off for that session.
