TLDR

Dutch police have confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old Amsterdam man in an investigation into the cybercrime group ShinyHunters, with a court appearance scheduled Tuesday in Rotterdam. Authorities have not said what conduct the suspect is accused of or linked him publicly to any specific attack. The arrest has renewed attention on the February breach at Dutch telecom company Odido, which ShinyHunters claimed and which affected 6.2 million customers, though police have not said the suspect was involved. SecurityWeek identified the man as Pepijn van der Stap and reported that he had been convicted in 2023 for hacking, data theft and extortion and was working as an offensive security lead.

Dutch police have confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam in an investigation into the cybercrime group ShinyHunters. The suspect is scheduled to appear Tuesday before judges at Rotterdam District Court.

Police have so far said little publicly about the case beyond confirming the arrest. Authorities have not disclosed what conduct the man is suspected of or identified any specific attacks they believe involved him, as The Register reported.

The arrest has nevertheless drawn attention to a major recent Dutch cybercrime case: the February breach at telecom provider Odido, which The Register reported was claimed by ShinyHunters and affected 6.2 million customers. Police have not said the arrested man took part in that intrusion.

Investigators previously said the Odido breach began with a Dutch-speaking caller who posed as an IT colleague and persuaded a customer service employee to provide access to an internal system, The Register reported. Police later released part of that social-engineering call on September 8 and said they received 20 tips afterward.

Separately, SecurityWeek reported that the suspect is believed to be Pepijn van der Stap. That report described him as a hacker convicted in 2023 for multiple intrusions, data theft and extortion, and said he is now employed as offensive security lead at Neo Security.

For now, the public record remains limited. Police have not publicly connected the suspect to the Odido breach or any other named ShinyHunters operation.

Joseph Cox@josephfcoxThere is something very odd about the timeline here. The man was arrested around September 16. ShinyHunters told me it hacked the FBI on September 21, and we broke news of the breach on September 22. So, the FBI hack appears to have happened way after the arrest. It’s not like the FBI and its Dutch partners jumped into action in the wake of the hack. It’s the other way around. They’re just announcing it now. The FBI is suggesting this is a counter to the massive hack, but it's not10d
