404 Media says it received a sample appearing to contain personal data on 5,000 FBI employees, including addresses, phone numbers and, in some cases, spouse details.

TLDR

Cybersecurity Dive reports that the FBI said on September 23, 2026, it was investigating ShinyHunters’ claims. The bureau had not determined whether the entry point was a third-party provider or its own systems. ShinyHunters told 404 Media it held data on all FBI employees and applicants; the outlet says it matched some phone numbers in a sample to the names listed. The Washington Post reports that the FBI had not confirmed the extent of the alleged breach. Cybersecurity Dive says the group demanded the bureau correct or remove parts of a May warning about its tactics.

ShinyHunters says it has breached FBI-related services and obtained personal data on FBI employees and job applicants, a claim that has not been confirmed by the bureau in the reporting available so far.

Featured Source

404 Media reported that a representative for the hacking group provided it with a purported sample covering 5,000 FBI employees. The outlet said the sample included alleged names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and, in some cases, information about spouses. It checked some of the phone numbers using an open-source intelligence tool and found that some were associated with U.S. Department of Justice personnel.

That check is meaningful but limited: it supports the possibility that at least part of the sample contains real government-related information; it does not independently establish the group’s broader claim that it has data on every FBI employee and applicant, or confirm how the data was obtained.

What the group says it accessed

The group told 404 Media it used a previously undisclosed flaw in Oracle’s PeopleSoft software to reach AWS GovCloud servers, then copied between two and three terabytes of data. It also claimed access to FBI criminal-justice, human-resources and medical-related services. Those details are ShinyHunters’ account, not independently verified findings.

The group also defaced the FBI’s jobs site, according to 404 Media. The page displayed a message claiming the site had been seized by ShinyHunters before it was taken down for maintenance. That visible disruption adds context to the claim, but it does not settle the reported scope of any data theft.

Why personnel data raises the stakes

The alleged material is especially sensitive because information that ties an agent or applicant to an address, phone number or family member could be used for harassment, targeting or intelligence work if it were authentic and widely shared. TechCrunch’s report notes the potential counterintelligence consequences of exposing such data.

ShinyHunters said its action was intended to pressure the FBI to retract statements about the group rather than to seek money. That is also the group’s own characterization. The central unanswered questions remain whether FBI systems were breached, what records are genuine, how much data was taken and whether the reported software flaw exists. Until those questions are independently resolved, the episode is best understood as a serious, partially corroborated claim rather than a confirmed account of a full FBI compromise.
