Microsoft unveils Copilot redesign with chat, app building and Autopilot

The Verge reports that Cowork, Code and Autopilot will be billed by usage, while a regular Copilot subscription will cover chat and Copilot in Office apps.

TLDR

The Verge reports that the redesigned Copilot brings together three tabs: Home combines Chat and Cowork, Code will let users build and share cloud-hosted internal apps, and Autopilot replaces the Scout assistant. Microsoft describes Autopilot as a cloud-based “digital teammate” that can keep working while users are away, monitoring Teams channels, running recurring tasks and handling follow-ups.

The Verge says Cowork, Code and Autopilot will use usage-based billing. Its September 25, 2026 report said Home and Code would begin rolling out through Microsoft’s Frontier early-access program in the following weeks. Autopilot’s private preview was planned for later in September, with Code previews for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers planned for later in 2026.

Microsoft is turning Copilot into a single workplace app for conversation, software creation and longer-running agent work. The redesign has three main areas called Home, Code and Autopilot, bringing features that previously lived across different Microsoft AI products into one interface.

Featured Source

The Verge reports that Home combines Copilot Chat with Cowork and will be the app's default landing page. Microsoft also plans a Today view that can pull together email, meeting requests, Teams threads and assignments, then suggest follow-ups for the user to review.

Code turns prompts into internal apps

Code is designed to let workers create an app, dashboard, tracker or automation from written instructions. Microsoft says it uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and runs generated projects in a sandboxed environment.

VentureBeat's account of the announcement says Copilot Managed Runtime can host those apps inside an organization's Microsoft 365 boundary. Administrators decide which data connections and endpoints are allowed, while Git tracks source-code versions. Microsoft is also opening the hosting path to compatible outside development tools through an SDK.

That makes the product more than a chat interface: Microsoft is offering to generate, host and govern small workplace applications in the same environment. The practical limits will depend on each organization's permissions and on how reliably generated apps work with its data and processes.

Autopilot is Scout with a persistent workspace

Autopilot is the new name for Scout, Microsoft's earlier personal-agent project. It receives its own identity, memory, cloud computer and workspace inside a customer's tenant. Microsoft says it can watch conversations, handle recurring responsibilities and continue a project after the employee who assigned it has logged off.

Employees can interact with Autopilot through Teams, Outlook and documents, including by mentioning it like a colleague. Agent 365 supplies permission, audit and administrative controls around that activity. Microsoft's demonstrations illustrate intended workflows, however, and do not establish how well the agent will perform across customer deployments.

Availability and pricing remain uneven

The rollout is staggered. Home and Office integration are beginning with Frontier participants, Code is scheduled to reach Frontier at the end of September, and Autopilot's private preview is expanding at month-end. Other pieces, including Today, have later preview schedules.

Microsoft had not supplied detailed prices for the newly announced capabilities when VentureBeat published. Existing Copilot subscriptions and usage-based credits provide some context, but they are not enough to calculate the cost of a continuing Autopilot assignment or a hosted Code project. For businesses, that leaves the biggest operational question unresolved: how much persistent AI work will cost once it moves beyond demonstrations and into daily use.

Deirdre Bosa@dee_bosaThe new Copilot is Microsoft’s bet that the AI race is moving from models to products. It doesn’t need to own the best model if Copilot can choose among them and keep the customer inside Microsoft. The potential secret weapon is Autopilot (what I’ve been calling Muse for Business). It knows your workflows, sits across the apps and data you already use, and keeps working even when you step away. It’s a preview of the battle to come in enterprise AI. OpenAI and Anthropic are racing from models into products. Can they build their own version of this? And can they match Microsoft on the boring-but-critical stuff: permissions, identity, auditability and control, as agents become more autonomous? My full conversation with @satyanadella.
