Sony reportedly surveyed developers about its plan to end new PlayStation discs

The report comes from leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead and does not establish that Sony has reversed its January 2028 cutoff.

TLDR

Sony reportedly sent game developers a large survey that indirectly asked about concerns with ending physical PlayStation game production, according to Wccftech’s account of claims by leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead. The survey may show Sony is gathering industry feedback, but neither the leaker nor the outlet established that the company has decided to reverse its January 2028 cutoff. Wccftech also points to continued physical demand, including Alinea Analytics’ estimate that retail copies produced 23% of Marvel’s Wolverine revenue during its first three days.

Sony reportedly asked game developers for feedback related to its plan to stop manufacturing new PlayStation game discs in January 2028. The claim comes from leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead and has not been confirmed by Sony.

Wccftech’s account says the leaker described the questionnaire as unusually large. One question allegedly asked developers, in an indirect way, whether there was a problem with how games are sold physically.

A survey is not a reversal

Gathering feedback could mean Sony is testing the consequences of its policy, but it does not establish that the company has decided to change it. The leaker framed a reversal as a possibility, and Wccftech explicitly says Sony’s position remains unresolved.

Physical sales still matter for some major releases. Wccftech cites Alinea Analytics data estimating that retail copies accounted for 23% of Marvel’s Wolverine revenue during its first three days on sale. Former PlayStation executives Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes also reenacted their famous physical-game-sharing photo at Tokyo Game Show without exchanging a disc, a gesture some fans interpreted as criticism, though that interpretation is not proof of Sony’s internal plans.

Sony’s announced January 2028 cutoff therefore remains the operative policy. The reported survey is evidence of developer outreach, not confirmation that physical production will continue.
