Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, a new version of its mid-tier model that the company says is built for coding, debugging, document creation and other everyday knowledge-work tasks. According to Moneycontrol’s report on the launch, Anthropic describes Sonnet 5.5 as sitting below Claude Opus 5.5 in its lineup, with Opus positioned for more open-ended work.
Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 generates responses more than 30% faster than Claude Sonnet 5 and can reduce per-task costs by up to 30%, according to Moneycontrol. Moneycontrol reports that Anthropic attributes those task-cost savings to lower token usage.
Where Anthropic says it improved
Anthropic is pitching Sonnet 5.5 for relatively well-defined work, especially software tasks. According to Moneycontrol’s report, Anthropic says the model is built to handle multi-step coding tasks, understand codebases and reduce the number of steps needed to complete work.
Anthropic also points to benchmark gains. According to Moneycontrol’s write-up, Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, compared with 10.3% for Sonnet 5.
Where you can get it
Claude Sonnet 5.5 is available through Anthropic and major cloud providers including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, according to Moneycontrol.
That makes the launch less about a lower list price than about Anthropic’s broader pitch for the middle of its lineup: a model the company says can handle a lot of routine coding and knowledge-work jobs faster, and at lower total task cost, than the previous Sonnet release.
