TLDR

Microsoft said someone gained unauthorized access to its official X account and posted content that did not come from the company. The Verge reported the account briefly followed and reposted a Clippy-themed crypto account, changed its profile image, and later showed a short-lived apology post before Microsoft secured the account and removed the posts.

Microsoft said its official account on X was accessed without authorization and used to publish posts that did not come from the company.

Featured Source

In a statement reported by The Verge, Microsoft spokesperson Brent Colburn said, “We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X including posts that did not come from Microsoft.” Colburn added that “the account has been secured and the unauthorized posts have been removed,” and said the company is still investigating what happened.

Before that confirmation, The Verge reported that the official @microsoft account had briefly followed a Clippy-themed crypto account, reposted one of its tweets, and switched its profile picture to a Clippy image. According to The Verge’s report, those posts were later removed. The outlet also said a strange apology post appeared about 30 minutes later and was deleted quickly.

The apparent takeover was also flagged by Verge senior correspondent Tom Warren, who posted on X that Microsoft’s account “looks like” it had been taken over and linked to a Clippy crypto scam.

Based on the supplied evidence, Microsoft has confirmed the unauthorized access and cleanup. The Clippy account activity and the deleted apology post come from The Verge’s reporting, while Microsoft’s public explanation so far does not add detail about how the account was accessed or who was responsible.
