TLDR

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the US should not cooperate with China on AI governance because it could help Beijing catch up with American companies. He made the remarks shortly before a White House lunch on AI co-hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson and attended by 31 confirmed guests including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Jensen Huang, Dario Amodei and OpenAI president Greg Brockman. After the lunch, Trump said the executives favored self-regulation and said he planned to sign an order making “super intelligence” the official US term for AI. TNW also reported that a seating chart Trump posted showed Musk seated next to him.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he does not want the US to cooperate with China on AI governance, arguing that such cooperation would give Beijing access to American advances and help it close the gap with US companies.

Speaking in Washington before a White House lunch with AI and tech executives, Trump said that working jointly with China would let it “immediately gain access to things that we know that they don’t know” and added that the US is leading “over China and everyone else” and should keep it that way, as TNW reported.

The comments came shortly before the White House lunch, which TNW reported was co-hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Who was at the lunch

The gathering included 31 confirmed guests, with TNW reporting that an RSVP list obtained by Axios named Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei among the attendees. OpenAI was represented by president Greg Brockman.

After the event, TNW reported that a seating chart Trump posted online showed Musk seated to his left, while Huang sat to his right.

Trump’s message after the meeting

Following the lunch, Trump told reporters that the executives believed companies should largely police themselves rather than face new AI safety rules, TNW reported, citing NBC News.

He also said he would sign an order later that day making “super intelligence” the official US term for AI, TNW reported.

Taken together, the day’s remarks underscored the administration’s preference for a lighter regulatory approach to AI, pairing resistance to cooperation with China with support for industry self-regulation.
