Facebook and Instagram largely recovered after users reported trouble accessing the services Sunday evening, Sept. 20. Downdetector logged more than 17,000 Facebook incident reports and more than 5,000 for Instagram in the U.S., but those voluntary submissions are not a count of everyone affected. Reuters said reports fell sharply by about 10 p.m. Eastern. Meta did not immediately respond to its request for comment, and no cause has been established.

Facebook and Instagram largely recovered after a brief disruption Sunday evening, Sept. 20, that sent users to outage trackers. Reuters reported more than 17,000 reports of Facebook problems and more than 5,000 for Instagram in the United States. Reports fell sharply by about 10 p.m. Eastern, suggesting the services had largely returned.

Those figures count submissions to Downdetector, not the total number of people whose accounts or feeds failed. Users can report a problem there voluntarily, so the tallies show a significant spike in complaints without establishing the full reach of the disruption.

Tom's Guide tracked the outage live and reported Facebook pages failing to load, alongside a rise in Instagram complaints. Its reporter saw Meta's status page displaying “No known issues” during the disruption. Reuters said Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The cause has not been established.
