TLDR

Semafor reported on September 24, 2026, that U.S. Treasury yields reached their highest level since 2007, with the 10-year above 5%. CNBC reported that the 30-year fixed mortgage rate jumped to 7.45%, its highest since April 2024.

Bloomberg says the yield surge threatens to push up borrowing costs for mortgages, car loans and credit cards. It also reports that Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack attributed higher long-term yields to a stronger growth outlook, government-debt concerns and expectations for further Fed rate increases.

CNBC's September 26 coverage also points to sticky inflation, heavy bond issuance and an AI-fueled investment boom as drivers of the 10-year yield's rise.

Coin Bureau@coinbureau🇺🇸BREAKING: The US 10-year Treasury yield hits 5.2%, its highest since 2007. It surged 26 basis points in just two days, while the 30-year climbed to 5.5%, a level last seen in June 2004, per FT. Oil back above $106 and the fastest US business growth in five years have traders betting the Fed will raise rates faster. The surge is already hitting home loans, with 30-year mortgage rates averaging 7.03%, the highest since January 2025, per Freddie Mac.17d

The Wolf Of All Streets@scottmelkerThe bond market is sending a very loud message. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield just hit 5.196%, its highest level since 2007. The 30-year reached 5.4816%, its highest since 2004. That matters. When investors can earn more than 5% lending money to the U.S. government, the hurdle rate for every other asset gets higher. Stocks have to justify their valuations. Companies have to refinance debt at higher rates. Mortgage rates stay elevated. Speculative assets have to compete with a risk-free return that suddenly looks pretty attractive. And the move is accelerating. Markets are now pricing roughly a 71% chance of another Fed rate hike in October after the Fed already raised rates by 25 basis points last week. Demand at recent Treasury auctions has also been weak, adding even more pressure to yields. None of this means markets automatically collapse because the 10-year is above 5%. That is not how this works. The real question is how high yields can go, and how quickly they can get there, before something finally stops absorbing the pressure. So far, stocks and $BTC have held up surprisingly well considering how dramatically borrowing costs have risen. That resilience matters. But the bond market is now moving into territory we have not seen in decades. Bitcoin will get the headlines. The Treasury market may be the more important chart right now.17d
Peter Schiff@PeterSchiffAnother day, another high in bond yields. The 10-year Treasury now yields 5.2% and the 30-year yields 5.48%. Enjoy these low rates while you can as they won't last long. Soaring government spending, debt, inflation and de-dollarization will drive rates much higher. Got gold?17d

Bull Theory@BullTheoryio🚨THE BOND MARKET IS FLASHING A MAJOR WARNING The 10-year Treasury yield just surged above 5.20% for the first time in 19 years. It is now up almost 30 basis points in just 2 days, marking one of the fastest bond selloffs in years. The last time yields were around these levels was in 2007, the same year US economy entered recession that eventually became the Global Financial Crisis. But this move isn't happening for no reason. September's flash PMI just hit a 5-year high, inflation pressures are rising again and markets are pricing in a more hawkish Fed. At the same time, oil remains near $100 and massive government borrowing continues to put pressure on the bond market. This is why 5.20% matters. The 10-year Treasury is the benchmark behind mortgage rates, corporate borrowing and valuations across financial markets. The higher it goes, the more pressure builds across the entire financial system. Something eventually has to absorb that pressure, either yields come back down or something starts breaking in the financial system.17d
