OpenAI begins rolling out Dots, always-on agents in ChatGPT

OpenAI says each Dot has its own cloud computer and can connect to over 4,000 apps. Every reports that an early tester’s Dot spotted a scheduling conflict, but also had permission problems and dropped messages.

TLDR

OpenAI says Dots are GPT-6 Astra-powered agents that can keep working across connected apps. The rollout begins with Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets; Enterprise users can try a beta when a workspace admin enables it. Users can inspect a Dot’s cloud computer and set rules for when it needs approval. Every reports that an early tester’s Dot flagged a scheduling conflict from an unread Slack discussion, though he also encountered permission problems and dropped messages.

OpenAI is beginning to roll out Dots, persistent agents in ChatGPT that can work across connected apps and continue projects in the background. The company’s launch announcement describes them as powered by GPT-6 Astra, with their own cloud computers and access to more than 4,000 apps through plugins.

The rollout starts with Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare workspaces, can try a beta when their workspace admin enables it.

A computer of its own

OpenAI says a Dot can use its own browser and connected apps, take on several projects at once, and learn from feedback. Users can inspect its cloud computer or optionally give it access to another device, including their laptop.

Dots can be reached through ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, as well as Slack and Teams. Texting is planned, rather than available as part of the announcement. Setup starts in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser; afterward, users can message their Dot from the mobile app.

Those are OpenAI’s descriptions of the product’s capabilities. The company also warns that Dots can make mistakes and tells users to review consequential work.

What can happen without approval?

Users choose which apps to connect. OpenAI says Custom Rules can allow specific actions, require approval or block them, while built-in safety requirements continue to apply. Activity View lets users follow background work and redirect the agent.

The announcement draws a distinction between acting on a task and looking for ways to help. When a user is not actively working with a Dot, its “proactive research” uses read-only tools in already connected apps. OpenAI says those tools cannot send messages, change app content or control a browser or computer.

That restriction applies to proactive research, not every task a Dot can perform. The company describes action review against the user’s instructions, Custom Rules and safety requirements, and says some sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, stay with the user.

Included access has limits

A first Dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. The plans include an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch.

Conversations with a Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, OpenAI says. But tasks it starts or manages in Codex or ChatGPT Work count toward those products’ usage limits as usual.

Chubby♨️@kimmonismusOpenAI’s rumored Dots could have an edge over Grok Bot and Meta Muse if they can build on your existing ChatGPT context and handle complex tasks with fewer corrections. The leaked desktop access and custom approval rules look promising. Imagine delegating research, letting your Dot work across cloud tools and local files, and approving only the decisions you want control over. If all those leaks turn out to be true this could be really really cool.11d

Dan Shipper@danshipperBREAKING: @OpenAI just announced Dots—always-on agents in ChatGPT I've been testing it for the last few days @every, here's a quick vibe check: What you should know: - They'll look familiar if you've used OpenClaw, Muse, Instinct, or Grok Bots. - Your Dot sits in the redesigned ChatGPT sidebar right below the “New chat” button - It has its own cloud computer that lets it work while your laptop is closed. You can text it any time or call it on the phone. Vibe check—the good When it’s working, it changes the way I use ChatGPT: I interact with Boo (my Dot’s name), and Boo orchestrates ChatGPT threads, reads my email, uses Slack, and more. It automatically filters incoming Slack requests and emails so I can quickly triage items without opening my inbox. When I was rescheduling a flight, Boo warned me that my new flight time would conflict with a meeting request from Slack that I hadn’t read. That’s the promise: an ongoing agent that filters what needs my attention and acts proactively on my behalf, in one long-running chat thread. Vibe check—the bad But the version I tested over the last few days was buggy and lacked some features I would expect, like iMessage support. I had frequent issues with permissions and dropped messages, and my Dot was unable to connect to its own in-app browser. The verdict During testing, I found myself reaching for my Dot over starting new Codex threads, so it has definitely become a habit despite the frustration. And during the tesitng period the team was rapidly fixing issues—so I'd expect most of this to be smoothed out over the coming days and weeks. Unless you love new things with rough edges, I’d recommend waiting a week or two to try it. OpenAI will have solved a lot of these paper cuts by then. If you’re already deep into Grok Bots, Muse, or Instinct, it’s probably not an immediate switch unless you’re also a big ChatGPT or Codex user.
