According to ZDNet Korea, Sony transferred 43 U.S. patents related to extended reality to Meta between June and September. The outlet says the changes appeared in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office assignment records. The patents cover technologies for virtual, augmented and mixed reality, including head-mounted display systems.
Those transfers are part of a broader confirmatory assignment signed in December 2025 that covers 419 patents worldwide. ZDNet Korea reports that the total includes 180 U.S. patents and 239 related filings in Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and other regions.
The 43 patents are the portion whose change in ownership had appeared in the U.S. records when ZDNet Korea reported the deal. The agreement’s larger scope does not mean every patent in the 419-patent portfolio has already completed the transfer.
Video Games Chronicle framed the sale as an apparent scaling back of Sony’s VR ambitions. That is an interpretation of the transaction, not a stated company strategy. VGC notes that Sony published two original games for PlayStation VR2, Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Firewall Ultra, before adding PC support through an adapter in 2024.
