Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a new AI upscaling feature for the standard PS5.
In its PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony says QSSR is the first attempt to bring some of the image-quality gains associated with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, to the base console. Sony says QSSR was born from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and is built on two changes meant to make that possible on PS5: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on the system.
Sony also says PSSR remains “the gold standard” on PS5 Pro, while QSSR brings improvements to image detail and image stability on PS5. The company says QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers, which points to a wider rollout beyond the first games.
Sony’s announcement does not include a detailed cross-game performance breakdown against PSSR. For that, the early context comes from outside reporting. The Verge, citing Digital Foundry’s early hands-on impressions, says QSSR appears to be less fast than PSSR because the base PS5 lacks dedicated machine-learning silicon. In that same outside analysis, The Verge says players should probably expect something closer to an upscaled 1440p result on PS5, rather than the upscaled 4K output developers often target on PS5 Pro.
So the clear takeaway from Sony’s own announcement is narrower than the broader speculation around it: AI upscaling is coming to the standard PS5, Sony is positioning QSSR below PSSR on PS5 Pro, and the feature is intended to be available broadly to PlayStation developers.
