TLDR

IGN reports that Switch 2 players can unlock The Witcher 3 Remastered for free with a physical Switch copy, including a borrowed one. IGN also says owners found the cartridge does not need to stay inserted afterward, and frames the result as stemming from CD Projekt’s promise of free upgrades for physical copies, rather than as a specifically confirmed borrowed-copy policy.

In the same report, IGN says Switch 2 owners found that the original cartridge does not need to stay inserted after the remaster is unlocked.

IGN also reports that physical The Witcher 3 cartridges for Switch can be used multiple times to grant a digital copy of the remaster. In an X post linking to the story, IGN described the result as an apparent case where borrowing a physical copy can still leave a player with the digital edition.

IGN frames the broader setup as part of CD Projekt's promise that upgrades for the relaunched RPG would be free on all platforms, including physical copies. But in the supplied evidence, the specific borrowed-copy and repeated-use outcome is reported by IGN as a player discovery, not independently confirmed here as an explicitly stated CD Projekt policy.
