Sony reportedly surveyed developers about ending PlayStation game discs

Eurogamer traced the claim to Moore's Law Is Dead and says Sony has not confirmed that the survey exists.

TLDR

Sony reportedly asked developers for feedback on physical game sales as it prepares to stop producing discs for new PlayStation releases in January 2028. Eurogamer traced the claim to Moore's Law Is Dead host Tom, who cited unnamed contacts and described a survey question about possible problems with physical sales. Eurogamer says it found no other evidence for the survey and contacted Sony for confirmation. Sony's published policy remains unchanged: new games released from January 2028 onward will be digital-only, while earlier releases are unaffected.

Sony may be asking game developers how its planned exit from physical releases will affect them, but the reported outreach is not yet confirmation that the company is changing course.

Featured Source

Eurogamer reports that Sony sent developers an unusually large survey containing a question about whether there is an issue with the way games are sold physically. The claim originated with Tom, host of the YouTube technology-reporting channel Moore's Law Is Dead, who cited unnamed contacts. Eurogamer said it had no other evidence that the survey exists and contacted Sony to verify the report.

That leaves two separate facts to hold in view: developers may be getting a chance to weigh in, while Sony's announced policy has not changed.

The January 2028 cutoff still stands

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in July that it will stop producing discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. Those releases will instead be sold digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers. Games already released, along with games due on disc before the cutoff, are not affected.

The company attributed the decision to consumer demand moving toward digital media. Its announcement did not describe a developer consultation or leave an explicit exception for particular publishers.

A survey would not equal a reversal

If the reported survey is real, its most immediate significance is that Sony is collecting developer feedback while there is still more than a year before the policy takes effect. It does not show what answers developers supplied, whether Sony considers the results representative or whether any part of the plan will change.

Eurogamer's report raises the possibility that feedback could affect the pace or implementation of the transition, but presents that as analysis rather than a confirmed Sony decision. Until Sony acknowledges the survey or revises its published plan, the January 2028 cutoff remains the clearest statement of what PlayStation developers and customers should expect.
