Apple's watchOS 27 adds a long list of changes that are not limited to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. The update, released September 14, reshapes how supported watches launch apps, surface suggestions and handle several familiar tools.
Apple's release notes confirm a dedicated Siri app that stores conversations, a Siri Modular watch face, a Dynamic app grid and a single-handed Tap gesture for opening the highlighted Smart Stack widget. The grid emphasizes frequently and recently used apps, while the alphabetical list remains available through the Digital Crown.
Everyday controls have moved
MacRumors' guide says the separate Find Devices, Find Items and Find People apps have been folded into one map-centered Find My app. Walkie-Talkie, by contrast, has been removed and cannot be reinstalled after updating.
The double press of the Digital Crown also no longer opens the App Switcher. It opens the Dynamic app grid instead because Apple reserved the gesture for Live Rewind, a forthcoming Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature that can transcribe the previous 15 seconds of nearby speech. MacRumors reports that watchOS 27.2 is expected to restore App Switcher access through a different gesture.
Smart Stack suggestions now cover more situations, including a parked car, a close contact's birthday, a travel-card balance change and a reminder that Theater Mode remains enabled. Workout Buddy can also run without a nearby iPhone when the watch has Wi-Fi or cellular service.
Health and fitness changes come with limits
Apple says new motion algorithms improve treadmill distance calculations from the first step, while post-workout route maps should also be more accurate. Cycle Tracking can notify users 40 and older when their logged patterns are suggestive of perimenopause; Apple describes that as a pattern notification, not a diagnosis or a birth-control tool.
Some of the flashier additions still require Apple's newest hardware. Live Rewind is limited to Series 12 and Ultra 4, and MacRumors says the new real-time Steps complication depends on those models' redesigned pedometer system and S11 chip. That leaves watchOS 27 as a broad software update, but not a promise of feature parity across every supported watch.
