TLDR

Meta has unveiled VR Glasses, a roughly 100-gram headset built around a 5K micro-OLED display, eye tracking, hand tracking and voice control. A separate wired box holds the Snapdragon processor, battery and storage, helping make the glasses about one-fifth the weight of a Quest 3. Meta says the device will support private multi-screen workspaces, immersive video and hand-controlled games, with Meta AI built into the operating system. It is scheduled for spring 2027 at $1,299.99, and Meta claims up to three hours of high-resolution playback.

Meta has unveiled a virtual-reality device that looks more like oversized glasses than a conventional headset. The company says its new Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams, use a 5K micro-OLED display and will sell for $1,299.99 when they arrive in spring 2027.

The lighter frame comes with a tradeoff. Meta moved the processor, battery and storage into a separate box connected by an optical cable, which users can clip to a pocket or bag. The glasses themselves contain the display and sensors, while the external unit provides the computing power.

Eye and hand tracking replace controllers

Meta says users can navigate by looking at controls, moving their hands or speaking. Meta AI is integrated into the operating system, and the company says it can open apps, adjust a workspace and search for information. The launch post initially circulated with claims about Muse integration, but Meta's detailed product announcement describes the assistant as Meta AI.

The company is pitching the device as a cinema, game system and work setup. It says the glasses can create one or more private virtual screens, turn a flat surface into a keyboard and trackpad, and show the wearer's surroundings through color passthrough cameras. More than 75 games designed for hand controls are promised at launch, with additional titles available through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Meta also says the headset will support IMAX Enhanced movies, immersive sports feeds and spatial audio. Those content partnerships and the company's comfort claims will need to be judged after the device ships. For now, the main engineering bet is clear: move the heavy components off the face, accept a cable and pocket box, and use tracking instead of handheld controllers.
