TLDR

A post citing Bloomberg says OpenAI is seeking $30 billion in new funding at a $1.4 trillion valuation. The poster compares that with a $122 billion raise at an $852 billion valuation in March and argues that the IPO delay is about OpenAI’s finances rather than Altman’s stated safety concerns.

Hedgie@HedgieMarkets🦔OpenAI wants another $30 billion. The company is seeking a new funding round at a $1.4 trillion valuation, per Bloomberg. This is a bridge round because OpenAI delayed its IPO, with Altman citing safety concerns. OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation. Six months later it needs $30 billion more. The company missed its own targets for revenue and new users earlier this year and recently cut usage allowances on its $200 plan. ARR is reportedly past $40 billion. My Take OpenAI raised $122 billion six months ago. That's gone. Or committed. Or spent. Whatever the word is, they need $30 billion more before they can face public market investors. Altman says the IPO delay is about safety. I think the IPO delay is about the books. Anthropic just filed a prospectus that showed $4.6 billion in revenue against $12.65 billion in expenses. If OpenAI's ratio looks anything like that, the last thing Altman wants is public investors with quarterly earnings calls asking where the money went. And the valuation jump is absolutely crazy. $852 billion in March. $1.4 trillion now. The company missed its own revenue targets, cut subscriber allowances, paused training on its most advanced models, and its agents accessed federal websites with stolen credentials. In what world does that earn a 64% valuation increase in six months? A world where the only way to survive is to keep the fundraising pipeline open. $30 billion buys time. That's all it buys.
