TLDR

OpenAI said on October 8, 2026, that Ultrafast was rolling out for GPT-6.1 Sol, promising near-Astra intelligence at up to 8x Sol Standard’s speed. A post sharing the announcement listed API pricing at $12 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens. One commenter said the speed tier signals a shift toward latency competition alongside capability competition.

OpenAI Rolls Out "Ultrafast" Mode for GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI said Oct. 8 it was rolling out Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol across the API, Codex and ChatGPT Work. The company describes it as offering “near-Astra intelligence” at up to eight times the speed of Sol Standard.

Pricing and use cases

For API users, OpenAI set pricing at $12 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens. The company positions the tier for latency-sensitive work such as debugging outages, agents navigating apps and live experiences where response time matters.

In Codex, OpenAI engineering lead Tibo said instant steering now lets the model react more quickly to mid-task adjustments, allowing users to change direction without wasting as much work. He said the steering update and Ultrafast mode work well together.

AI commentator Sonath framed the launch as a sign that competition among AI providers is expanding from model capability into latency and speed tiers.
