OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol on Tuesday with lower API prices and access through ChatGPT Work and Codex for paid subscribers. The company presents it as an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that approaches GPT-6 Astra on coding, computer use and professional tasks, according to its launch announcement.
Standard API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, one-fifth of Astra’s standard input and output prices. Cached input, which reuses context from earlier requests, costs $0.10 per million tokens. OpenAI puts that at a 95% discount to standard input pricing and half GPT-6 Sol’s cached-input price.
In its coding evaluations, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol matches Astra on DeepSWE v1.1, a benchmark of software-engineering tasks in real codebases, at roughly one-fifth of the cost. It also reports beating GPT-6 Sol’s best score by 6.4 percentage points at a lower reasoning effort and cost.
The company reports a factuality improvement at low reasoning effort: the share of answers containing an error fell from 11.4% for GPT-6 Sol to 7.7% for GPT-6.1 Sol. Those tests used deliberately difficult prompts from conversations where users had flagged an earlier model’s mistake. OpenAI cautions that they are not representative of typical usage.
The launch covers Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, along with API access under gpt-6.1-sol. The model is not yet available in Chat. OpenAI plans an Ultrafast option in the coming days with up to eight times faster token generation in Codex than the model’s standard speed.
